Like Adobe, ACDSee has been around since the early days of digital photography. Despite its comparative lack of name recognition, ACDSee’s professional photo workflow and editing package, ACDSee Photo Studio Professional, has long had partisans who prefer it to Lightroom. ACDSee continues to develop its software, and face recognition is the biggest add for the version. Some of the program’s tools, such as its Light EQ adjusters, are particularly good. It’s also one of the faster photo workflow apps, but it still falls short of competitors like Editors’ Choice Adobe Lightroom in initial raw camera file conversion quality, effectiveness of corrections, and interface usability.

Pricing and Starting Up

ACDSee now emulates Adobe in offering its software through a subscription model, but you can also buy a simple one-time download for $99. Subscriptions start at $89 per year (or $8.90 per month), which allows up to five users to install the software (Mac or Windows), plus ACDSee Web galleries for showcasing your work and 50GB of SeeDrive Cloud Storage.The software runs on Windows 7 through Windows 10. There’s also Photo Studio for Mac ($99.99), now at version 5, that works on macOS 10.12 and later. That program also converts raw camera images, performs batch operations, and geo-tags maps, but it lacks the Windows version’s face recognition, LUT support, and local brush adjustments. The Windows program, reviewed here, requires a 64-bit CPU and at least 2GB RAM (6GB RAM or more recommended), an Intel i3 or better processor, 512MB Video RAM (VRAM), a DirectX 10 compatible graphics adapter, 1024-by-768 display resolution (1920-by-1080 recommended), and 2GB of available hard drive space.

I find ACDSee Photo Studio Professional’s interface friendlier than that of Capture One Pro or DxO PhotoLab, but Lightroom CC is simpler—unsurprising, as that has fewer tools. The ACDSee application uses the standard three-panel view, with image-source folders on the left, viewing area in the large middle section, and tools and properties on a right-side panel. You can choose from three interface colors: light, silver, and charcoal. Like Lightroom, but unlike DxO PhotoLab( at Amazon) and Capture One, ACDSee Photo Studio Professional uses a modal interface. These are basically tabs across the top of the application window that change the interface based on what you’re doing in the app—organizing, editing, exporting, and so on. The interface is flexible, letting you undock and auto-hide panels if you like.

I like the clear icon design for mode switching, compared with CyberLink PhotoDirector’s basic text buttons. The 365 button next to the mode buttons lets you upload photos to ACDSee’s cloud storage. Photos and View only differ in the number of images you see on the screen (lots for the former, one for the latter). Like Lightroom and PhotoDirector, ACDSee Photo Studio Professional now lets you customize which modes appear in the interface (aside from Manage, which, for obvious reasons, is required) in Tools > Options > General > Mode Configuration.

Taking a page out of mobile apps like the iPhone’s Photos app, ACDSee Photo Studio Professional’s Photos mode shows you every photo in its database, grouped by date.

The program supports touch gestures, which I tested on my touch-screen PC, pinch-zooming and swiping through photos in a folder. I found, however, that these interactions weren’t very responsive or reliable. Lightroom Classic’s touch support is way ahead of ACDSee’s in this regard. Also, buttons and menu choices are too small for the occasional screen tap. The app displayed just fine on a 4K-resolution screen in my testing, however.
